Today I was up and at the farm early for the 2nd culling of Kohakus. This years crop of Kohakus looks nice,... very nice! The 2nd cull is special. It's where I see the quality of what I have. The 1st cull is very hard work, and is about numbers. From the 1st cull I see how successful the spawn was, (Are there patterns?, and Are the bodys and the growth up to par?), and I see the numbers,... how many "Kohakus" I have from the spawn. It's a long day or two of looking at thousands and thousands of tiny red and white Koi. The 2nd cull is more relaxed, because the numbers have been trimmed down already, and I concentrate more on quality.
These Kohakus were born on 5/11/07, and today they average 6" to 7",... some are 5" and some are already 8". Some Benigoi from the group are larger. Overall I like what I see. The body shapes are excellent for this age, and the quality of skin is where I like to see it,... wonderful! Here are some photos and a short video from the day.
