Members of the Triad Koi Society visited today. The weather was good, about 90 F. and slightly overcast. In the morning we looked through several of the in-ground tanks, talked about a few Koi of interest, and photographed a few. Can-Can, my male parent Yamabuki Ogon was a typical ham, up at the surface flirting with the ladies.
Later we netted up about 75 three and a half month old sibling Kohaku babys and talked about quality features, such as bone structure, body shapes, girth of tail tubes, skin quality, and the development of the beni and white grounds, and what can be expected to happen with the kiwa. We narrowed the 75 down to the 8 best, and discussed how they would fare in Koi shows in the future. We then added 3 Kohakus that were 1 year older to the bowl, and compared and discussed the differences a year of development makes on the Hi plate. After this, we walked down to a grow-out pond and fed the siblings of this young group to see how their development compared,... having passed through two cullings.
At noon we drove to a nearby Mexican restaurant for lunch, then came back and pulled up about 100 metallic babys - Kujaku, Yamabuki Ogon, Hariwake, and Matsuba Ogon, and talked about what to look for for future quality in young metallics.
Here are 3 distinctly different Matsuba Ogons from the group.
Thank You Triad Koi Society for such an enjoyable Koi day!
