I packed up some fish and my video equipment and drove down to the Atlanta Koi Show this past weekend. Ive been going to the Atlanta Show since its beginning in the mid 90s when it was at the Mercer College Campus, then on to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and then to Stone Mountain Park in conjunction with JapanFest, and over to a Convention Hall in North Atlanta, and on to the Coastal Pond Supply warehouse, where its been for the past two years. My favorite site was Stone Mountain Park. The Park has so many fun activities and sites, in addition to the show, and JapanFest was always an enjoyable cultural event, with Japanese food, Japanese beer, Bonsai displays, drums, and a lot of other fun sights. Also, more than 12,000 people attending JapanFest were exposed to Koi as they walked through the show. It was a great opportunity to promote the hobby of Koi keeping to the masses.
The show this year at Coastal Pond Supply was a good show overall. The quality of fish entered was a wide range from very low to very, very high, and I had a good time looking at them all. There was a nice mix of Koi types competing. I enjoyed the weekend, videotaping coverage of the show for KOI FIXX, as a spectator, and as a vendor, and had such a good time visiting with friends.
Koi from Lotus Land Koi Farm did well at the show! Congratulations to Susan Reed for taking BEST IN SIZE 3 with a Sanke, the Mungo family for taking BEST IN VARIETY - Utsuri with a Shiro Utsuri they purchased 2 years ago, Dave Hester for taking BEST IN VARIETY - Hikari Utsuri with one of my new Ki Utsuris, the Atkinsons for 1st PLACE - Size 4 Kohaku, the Gingerichs for 1st PLACE - Size 4 Showa, and the Mungos for 1st PLACE - Size 3 Showa.
