I harvested my '07 Yamabuki Ogon crop today. Overall I'm very pleased with what I saw. The numbers are good, even after 2 strict cullings, the size is good overall for the age,... the spawn was hatched on 5/22/07, and the size is good despite the severe drought and heat the Carolinas have faced this Summer also.
Yamabuki Ogons arent that different than Gosanke in how they develop. The skin thickens as the Yamabuki matures,... the color thickens,... and the metallic shine becomes more prominent over the first few years. Heres an example of the thickness of color and metallic shine on one of my 3 year old Yamabuki Ogons.
Other characteristics of my Yamabuki Ogons include a genetic ability to grow very large, and a beautiful fukurin skin. The color varies from a light lemon yellow tint to a rich gold yellow tint.
Here is a video clip and some pics taken after the harvest today. You'll notice some very shiny aluminum foil like areas on the heads of these young Yamabuki Ogons. This is an early indication of a good metallic sheen for the future as the Koi develops, and that the sheen will withstand the growth and stretching as the fish's skull and body get larger. The Matsuba Ogon in the video clip is from a different parent set.
