Today’s harvest of 2 tosai ponds started early, with the draining beginning before sunrise. Colorado Koi Pal Rich Hirsch came out to help me with the seining. The 1st pond we tackled contained Kohaku tosai, which were from a late spawn in mid July. The 2nd pond contained some Sanke, Showa, Ki Utsuri, Hariwake, Goshiki, and Kujaku, combined together into that pond last October. Many of those tosai were also from late spawns. The crazy weather last spring and early summer pushed several of my spawns back as much as 2 months from my normal breeding schedule.
Rich navigating the mud as we lay out the seine.
A few of the Kohakus we pulled up before lunch - only 8 months old. Overall I was very pleased with what I saw,... great body and face shapes, nice silky elegant white, and solid clean hi plates.
After lunch we emptied the 2nd batch.
Tosai Goshiki. Notice the large mouth, head shape, and long slender body.
Two tosai Showas,... two distinctly different styles.
This tosai Showa is 2nd generation from my Magoi cross. Notice the shape of the snout, and the body lines from the eye back to the tail. The modern sumi is attaching well to the Magoi body. Notice the refinement of the motoguro.
Soragoi, Sanke, and Ki Utsuri tosai. Just like my Magoi crosses, my Ki Utsuri line has been built here from scratch,... using no original Ki Utsuri parents.
