10/3/07 - Tosai Kohaku Harvest

Today Koi pal Chuck Shaffer made the 2 hour drive over to help me harvest a pond of tosai Kohakus. We drank cold beer and played in the mud mid afternoon (seined), then sorted through baskets of young Kohakus after we got them all up from the pond. I'm very pleased with this group, so many excellent young Kohakus. The quality is exceptional, and the growth is impressive at 8" to 11.5" at only 5 months old.

A good strong body is the base of a great show fish. As you look through these photos and video consider the frames or bodies, the size of the mouth, the shape of the face and head, the body lines from nose to tail, the thickness of the tail tubes. A quality tosai Kohaku should show a soft beni or red that will grow with the fish over the years, and will become thicker and more sharp each year for the first few years of development, producing a beautiful adult Kohaku with color quality that lasts many, many years.

Buying your high quality Koi direct from Lotus Land Koi Farm around harvest time (Fall & Winter) ensures you that you're getting a young Koi FRESH - the color development has not been pushed or enhanced, and the growth has not been stunted or compromised. You're getting it fresh from my farm. You'll know the correct age, and the stage of development its in, so youll know how best to raise it from there,... whether its getting it ready soon for a show, or letting it develop slowly to reach its maximum potential size, which can be over 34" for the genetics I breed from.
