One of the more distinct and obvious features of a Koi’s lineage is the shape and ‘look’ of the face,... the bone structure,... length of the snout,... width of the head,... and overall shape of the face tends to be consistent among lineages, or bloodlines,... even with all of the blending that’s going on these days in Koi breeding. Body shape and face shape are more difficult to blend among lineages than sashi, kiwa and other color characteristics.
Here are a few of the faces at Lotus Land Koi Farm.
Faces of my modern Sensuke based Kohaku
Face of my Yagozen type Kohaku. This girl was born here in 2006, and became a parent Koi last Summer. I'll post an update on her babies here this Spring, when they're 10 months old.
Face of my Sadazo type Sanke,... a more blunt thick rounded look
Face of Showa
Face of Kujaku - must be clean with a good metallic shine. The nostrils of metallic Koi tend to be more pronounced than non-metallic types.
Face of my Magoi blends. Notice the overall length of the face from shoulder to nose, and the large mouth.
